Food-Related Lifestyle: Adaptation and Empirical Testing of the Instrument in the Russian Context. Evidence from Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast

The study examines food-related lifestyle patterns in Russia, using Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast as a case study. The theoretical framework is the food-related lifestyle (FRL) concept, which integrates cognitive, emotional, and behavioural aspects of eating and is widely used in international comparative research. The empirical basis is an original survey on eating habits conducted by the authors in Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad region between December 2024 and January 2025 (N = 703). The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews using a multistage, area-based sampling design. The sample was allocated proportionally across St Petersburg and the urban and rural settlements of Leningrad Oblast. Latent class analysis identifies five food-related lifestyle segments that differ significantly in terms of food involvement, food innovativeness and food responsibility: “foodies” (high involvement, innovativeness and responsibility), “adventures” (high innovativeness), “conservative” (high involvement, low innovativeness), “moderates” (average scores on all dimensions) and “uninvolved” (low scores on all dimensions). We profile the segments by nutrition practices, Schwartz’s values, and sociodemographic characteristics. In addition, an econometric analysis is carried out to examine the association between segment membership and the probability of exhibiting unhealthy eating behaviour. The findings show that unhealthy eating habits are less prevalent among adventurers and moderates, and that the food-related lifestyle segment is a significant predictor of unhealthy eating after controlling for socio-demographic characteristics.
