Multiplicity and Interconnectedness of Urban Conflicts: Measurement Methods, Description Models

This study examines the multiplicity and interconnectedness of urban conflicts as inherent properties of contemporary urban environments, along with methods for their measurement and descriptive modeling. The theoretical-methodological section synthesizes network approaches and strategic action field analysis to develop measurable indicators of interconnectedness, while the empirical part evaluates its detectability using data from the “Conflict NSK” database (n = 777) and semi-structured interviews (n = 65) with conflict participants. The core group of conflicts interconnected through actors, agendas, and locations is categorized into three types with similar substantive characteristics — complex, juxtaposed, and local conflicts. It is empirically proven that modern actors in urban conflicts are characterized by processes of personalization and networking of connections, which are realized in two models: “leader without a network” and “network without a leader”. The difficulties that accompany the increasing interconnectedness of conflicts include the increasing complexity of the prospects for their regulation and the need for a systemic approach to it, taking into account both public and shadow interactions. The reliability of interconnectedness markers presents a particularly significant problem in this context, as it complicates not only the identification of connections but also the attribution of specific types of underlying persistent conflicts.
