Abstract

The article presents a critical analysis of Russian and foreign scientific literature aimed at understanding the possibilities of environmental culture of city dwellers as one of the factors for overcoming modern environmental problems. The authors note that the modern era can be characterized as an urbanocene, because cities today are both the main sources of environmental problems and the hope for their solution. This is particularly evident in the fact that, in the face of environmental risks, cities are more open to cooperation than states and can shape trends in eco-urbanism, green urbanism, and various sustainable consumption models, which can be reflected in the environmental culture of their residents.

An analysis of the literature allowed the authors to clarify the content of the concept of environmental culture and identify key areas of empirical research in this area. The article names the main social institutions involved in environmental socialization and examines the mechanisms for the formation of environmental culture. The authors define the features of the environmental culture of the Russian cities residents as well as possible areas for further research and highlight the importance of such studies for the implementation of the Russian National Project “Environmental Well-being” scheduled for 2025-2030.
