Abstract

The article studies relationship between subjective assessments of the role of trust and the development of cooperation practices. Empirically, the study bases on the all-Russian online population survey conducted in May and June 2022 (N = 4422). The authors show that almost half of the respondents are ready to participate in cooperation, which, however, does not guarantee the implementation of the optimistic scenario for the development of cooperation in the short term. The results of the study indirectly indicate a distorted view of respondents about the essence of cooperative activity, which is opposed to economic benefit and commercial success. A lack of trust distorts consumer perception of cooperative products: almost half of the respondents (49.9%) believe that cooperatives supply goods that have not been tested for compliance with state standard (GOST). The study notes a distinction between trust in authorities (institutional) and in participants in economic relations (interpersonal). The respondents consider the latter as a more significant barrier to the development of cooperation. The survey revealed that the majority of respondents are afraid of fraudulent actions and dishonest behavior of a partner when joining a cooperative. Russians who noted an improvement in their financial situation after the introduction of sanctions expressed greater readiness to organize a cooperative.

The results of regression analysis showed the absence of a statistically significant relationship between the population’s readiness to join consumer cooperatives and the assessment of the role of trust. The key aspects related to respondents’ readiness to participate in cooperatives were the opportunity to start their own business and association with like-minded people. The results obtained illustrate the historically established desire of Russians for collective forms of economic activity, orientation toward the consolidated use of resources, and the predominance of solidarity values. Cooperation in this context might be considered as an opportunity to combine the economic and social expectations of the population.
